The reaction comes following a report in the Independent detailing that species and natural landscapes across Great Britain are currently facing the “biggest threat in a generation” after results from research carried out by 100 leading nature and conservation groups were released recently.

Named the Joint Links coalition, the coalition groups represent eight million people across the United Kingdom, and include organisations such as the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) and the National Trust. They have issued a warning stating that long-standing laws regarding conservation and protection are being “watered down”, and as a result are putting more than 1,000 species across the country at risk.

Habitats such as meadows, forests and wetlands are among those currently safeguarded, housing endangered species such as the hazel dormouse and the Dartford warbler, are currently protected under the Bird and Habitat Directives.

Kate Jennings, chairwoman of the Joint Links group, said:

“Uncertainty over the future of the directives resulting from the ‘fitness check’ review could be bad for nature, bad for people and bad for business. The laws are the foundation of nature conservation across Europe and deliver demonstrable benefits for nature, as well as significant social and economic benefits.”

A spokesperson for Southern Ecological Solutions has released a statement following the report: “It is clear that we are at a crossroads when it comes to the protection and conservation of some of our most endangered species and habitats in Great Britain.

“As more and more developments spring up across both the private and public sector, it is our job as a society to ensure that we are taking the necessary precautions to ensure these ecosystems and animals remain in a safe and protected environment. Dealing with these issues with the help of a team of professionals such as ourselves means that all parties – both natural and man-made – can have their interests served properly at all times.”
